Cheap bass cases

I always prefer the idea of plastic protecting my instruments over a soft case doing the job. Is there such a thing as a cheaper case for upright bass. Im not requiring it to stand up to a flight or shipping. But something that could withstand a few good knocks and bangs. Maybe a bit of a sliding around the back of a van when it goes around a tight corner too fast.

For example here is a cheap SKB case for a 3/4 cello. This type of thing.

Chances are they don't exist. But I thought I'd ask anyway. Maybe I should just make something like that monster ken smith has

Here is a bare bones model case from Lagarde in france. If you have a 3/4 size Bass, it will fit in here with a soft case, or you could pad it yourself.

I had a meisel semi-hard case for a bit (http://www.meiselmusic.com/accessories/cases.htm - scroll down). It was expensive, and shipping was just as much as the case. I found it a complete annoyance to use and even harder to load in and out of a car and through hallways. After a month or so I started using my bag instead. If you take care, a good bag can provide more protection than ever required.

How much does that cosi thing go for? I would have no problem kitting it out with padding and what not myself to make the bass a bit more snug in there.

I suppose the fact that a case can't collapse is a disadvantage, effectively doubling the amount of basses you have (space wise) when you take it out.

Although could you elaborate a bit on why it was more difficult to negotiate on corners and get it into the car? Was it the added size? I would of thought that it wouldn't of been much different regardless of the type of case.

a good bag is much better than a cheap hard case.

The added size...it is bigger than you would think. The handles were in awkward positions. It was hard to carry - clumsy. When carrying a soft case, you tend to hold it close to your body, which makes you aware of where it is...you clearly can't do that with a hard case.

there's a great guitar case called the fort tric case, made for seagull, guitars. it's made of the same stuff that's inside car bumpers, some kid of very hard dense foam. it's light, waterproof and tough. it insulates extremely well.

It seem like something like this might be good or a double bass. On the other hand, I actually don't have room for what would in effect be a second, larger bass, and it'd probably be harder to schlep in and out of gigs

This looks great, but I talked to him and my little larger than 3/4s wouldn't fit.

My Reunion Blues bag has seen about as rough a life as it could, and it still looks great, if a little dirty. (it's tan...) I've never had a bass damaged in it, except for one particualy well dented edge from where I dropped it against a car door frame. I have no need for a hard case, unless it's going on a plane.
