Cheap Upright

Hey, I'm an electric bass player looking to start upright, but sites such as musiciansfriend list the cheapest at about a grand.

Anyone know where I can get a cheap upright?

Quick! Run to the newbie links and read them first before the others see this thread!

You are fortunate to be in striking distance of a number of fine DB dealers. I'd forget the on-line music stores.

I guess I should put off the DB for awhile now and just wait a bit.

Normally I get my gear at factory price, but unfortunately the guy who I get it doesn't get any double basses.

basses for a grand are considered cheap basses so if you don't have the money for a decent cheap bass don't bother

don't get too discouraged. It can suck to come on here with a grand and have everyone tell you that you can't even play with that kind of money.

Couple of options for you-first, the rent to own scenario. lots of times the music seller will apply some, or all, of your rental $$ towards the purchase price.

second-you're a lot closer than you would be to buying a bass if you didn't have 1k. I have seen used englehardts for around that price, and depending on how they're set up, they could be all the bass you ever want/need. check CraigsList, and read the newbies links on cheap basses from china.

For a grand you can get an Englehardt C1 or a EM1 for a grand and some change. These are good basses for the money. They will need setup. Bob Gollihur has them. Good starter instrument.

"Musicians Friend" is not your Friend!!!! I bought my bass from Jerry at Fretwellbass.com. He's an awesome dude and has good prices on new engelhardts (not a shill, just satisfied...). Check him out, he should have something in your price range, does good set up work, and can ship you a bass.
