Cool

Hey Paul, I never said anything negative about your Bohmann intentionally. I just commented that the way you have it strung up for Jazz, sounds a bit thin for Bowing in an Orchestra for my taste.. I am sure that with a different type string, your Bass would also be a Monster Orchestral Bass.

Damon, Just beacuse I ponted out that Hamburgers are more popular than Steak doesn't make One a Snob. As a matter of fact, I gave some good reviews of Arnold's Standard Bass awhile ago and that is a Plywood Bass.

Like what Paul mentioned, "check out.....PASSION!".. That's a great description..

Guys like Paul, myself and others have a few ways to go, Speak our minds and drop names which is a natural thing to do IF you've been there, Act as if we don't know much and just go along with the Flow.. OR... Be silent and just talk within our own circle or mature Bassists with music and Pedigree Bass experience and or Passion for them...

You should not feel insulted if someone like Paul had worked with Bill Evans and mentions or another just bought a 3k Bow.. Who else can they share that with?...Everytime I hear about a Great Bass, I do my best to find out as much as possible.

Just imagine TB for a moment without ANY Pros out here to share their experiences. We don't get paid to spend our time here, we do it for the love of the Bass.. Plywood or otherwise...

Don't worry, this will be the last from me on this thread. I've clearly said exactly what I think and I'm not going to back out later with any kind of "geez you thin-skinned guys it was just a joke" kind of thing.

Just note that the unpleasantness in this thread has been over:

1) the music people play and love; and,
2) the instruments they play the music on.

Not exactly topics for which people lack passion around here.

One learns over time, however, who the folks are who consistently provoke these little fires with either their inept handling of matches or their genuinely offensive points of view. It's a small group, thank goodness.

Cool unpleasantness?

I don't see much unpleasantness here with the exception of some peoples comments about their Views and thoughts. Voice your opinion about the subject,, That is ok.. But to Voice your opinion about someone elses opinion.. That's rubbin elbows...

No one needs to leave here.. Just lighten up and discuss the topic.

Back to original topic (and original mean-spirited tone)

Just kidding; I'd rather not stir the tank. But I couldn't let these two go by:

Jimmy, in two posts about seven hours apart yesterday, you said:

Quote:
Yes, I will play root-V when it's needed, but just like the other bluegrass band I was in, I won't limit myself to it

And if there IS work, I sure haven't found it in 25 years.
Now I'm not one to jump to conclusions...

I don't think passion is lacking; it is just focused on other things whether it be music--witness the attack of the bluegrassers above-- or something else. We have folks here who lust after 200-year old instruments worth more than my home and farm. There is another group whose greatest desire is to possess one of Arnold's creations. There are folks would would sell their soul for a Kay. All have passion, but not about the same thing.

As you can see (above), my comment about passion, or the lack of it, wasn't directed at any of you people involved in this thread.
Steve and Damon, I wasn't accusing either one of you of being unpassionate...OK?

I never thought you were aiming anything at anyone specific. I feel you made a valid comment and I was just throwing out some additional food for thought.

Jeff, I wish I knew what your point was. I have NOT found steady bluegrass work for anyone in 25 years (actually closer to 30 now) of playing in Central Florida. And sorry, but I only like playing root-V in small doses. I'll do it as much as it's needed and I'll do it as well as anyone, but I don't have to like a steady diet of it.

Damon, I may have accused you guys of being thin skinned, but nowhere did I say I was joking.

Glad to see this thread hasn't lost its animosity. I was getting worried there for a while!

Here is some more fuel for the fire.

Someone tried a treble bar a long, long time ago. Blue grass doesn't go back that far does it? Therfore it was a new idea on a bluegrass bass which is what the builder claimed.

There you go two things to argue about.

Jimmy plays...

Electric bass....if I'm not mistaken so why would he be working in bluegrass bands? Didn't you just take up the doublebass a few months ago?

Jason, I have taken it up seriously a month and a half ago. But I have played washtub bass for years, and I split my time playing washtub and electric in that band. Also, the guitarist had an upright and I would use it occasionally.

We weren't a strict bluegrass band, but since we had a banjo player, that's what we called ourselves.

Also, I would point your attention toward New Grass Revival, Bela Fleck's first popular band, who also had an electric bassist.

Sorry, I was trying to be polite.

Maybe if you're playing more than the genre seems to call for, it's not such a mystery that you're not finding the gigs.

Maybe that's still too diluted...

If you do the job, you'll find work.

Yeesh.

When I find the time, I'll try to split this thread into several parts, hopefully each with its own topic, and move the parts to a logical place. In the meantime, I'd like to alert all of our members to a nice little forum feature called the "ignore list"...if someone is truly getting on your nerves, plug their name into your ignore list, and you won't be able to see their posts anymore. I can't use it now because of mod duties, but before I was attempting to moderate, I enjoyed it quite a bit.

I'd just like to say that Jon and I do the best job we can of walking the fine line between making everything fit within the rules and still allowing a free discussion of ideas. It's entirely possible that I've not been monitoring things closely enough lately, as a few have suggested. It's also possible that little spats like this are inevitable and not really very important in the greater scheme of things - hell, they do tend to happen in real life, don't they? And speaking of real life, I'll do my best to untangle this when real life allows. Until then...
