I'd never seen it or heard of it before a rehearsal last night when one of the bassists in the orchestra I just joined showed up with funny reddish hair on her bow. I couldn't decide if it was really colored that way or if it was really dirty, so I didn't ask about it.

Now that you ask about it, that must have been what she had.

I think the hair I've been using for quite a while now is what you're describing. I like it a lot - a bit coarser than white hair.

Upton has a video on Youtube all about bow hair and they cover this one. It is NOT salt and pepper. It is a naturally darker hair that is more coarse than Salt and Pepper but smoother than Black. Upton said that they have bought their last shipment with nothing more in sight. I think it sounds great because I want something just a little more grippy than salt and pepper.

I did. Maybe I got a bad batch, but it lasted less than a year, didn't grip any better IMO, and it seemed to be very dry, hairs just kept breaking off. Won't be trying it again.

Less than a year? A year seems like a pretty long time to expect a rehair to last.

At any rate, I haven't had any of those problems - you may have had a bad bunch I suppose.

The previous owner of my Finale carbon bow got it re-haired with chestnut. I've only had it for a few months, but I have no complaints. Overall I am delighted with the bow. But I don't practice for hours a day or anything like that.
