Chinese bass

I am interested in buying one of the Chinese basses you see on e-bay. I've seen them for 430.00 on up. Are they all about the same? I'm just looking for a starter to plink around on. Are there any for sale cheap on the classifieds here? Don't have or want to spend much.

Hey Joe... I see that you are from my old neck of the woods (I'm from the Minocqua area). I want to warn you that you are about to hear from a lot of people trying to steer you away from the really low end Ebay basses, and I'm afraid I'm one of them. There are other folks that will tell you that it'll work out fine, but they are in the minority. It's been discussed here a lot in the past. I'm afraid that the extreme climatic swings of Northern Wisconsin will doom a cheapo bass before you even get a chance to learn to play it. I would instead try to find a decent used Englehardt ply or something along those lines. I found a nice blond one once for $400, and I also had a lovely Epiphone ply that I got for $600. Both were lightyears beyond the basses I've seen come off of the 'bay.

On the other hand, I see that you're an ex-Harley hillclimber, so clearly you're not afraid of risky behavior. If you spend a little time here reading some of the tales of CCBs, BSOs, Craptastic Chinese basses, etc... you may want to keep your wallet in your pocket. Good luck.

If you get one of those, Joe, all I can say is, burn it and buy a Harley!

Get one of these like this guy just did.

go to pawn shops and stuff, watch ebay for classic gems like kays or epi's. you'll be surprised. also, ask the local schools if they have any old basses to get rid of.

Bottom line is this:

Get some help finding a good, used bass and you will:

a) have a good bass
b) be able to get your money back if you don't keep it

Buy a cheap ebay bass and you will:

a) possibly have a usable bass
b) have the possibility your bass is unplayable without
spending a lot more money on it
c) possibly reach a point where repair is not worth it (like an old car) and essentially have to "junk it".

i'd say keep your eyes peeled on some good deals in the classified section. you'd do a lot better spending a little more money on a bass some guy needs to get rid off on talkbass than some bass that is lurking around on ebay. ebay has some good used stuff, but i wouldn't go for any of the unheard of chinese basses.

I have a Cremona Chinese that I purchased from Portman's music in Savannah, GA about 3 years ago. I have had some major set up done and a new bridge put on and it is a very playable bass. I have gigged on it for over 2 years now with no problems at all. The sound isn't the greatest but it has been a great bass to learn on and if you might be interested in it send me a PM.
