Choosing between Strunal and Shen

Hi guys,
I am learning the DB and currently am playing a rental (Dvorak/Strunal 50/1). I'd like to get my own and am contemplating either a Strunal 5/5 fully carved or a Shen SB200. Both are from reputable stores where they set them up and in the case of the Shen make some upgrades similarly to what Uptonbass does. I'll get my teacher to play each so I can hear them properly but would either be a better instrument on the long run? they are roughly the same price, new around $3800.

I don't know the other brand you reference, but Shens are fantastic. I have an SB-80, and have quite a few friends with varying other models (a buddy of mine even has a panormo)

I'd go with that one unless someone else says otherwise.

I second the earlier reply about Shen basses. I was a student at IU 25 years ago, and I was really impressed by the quality and affordability of new instruments being made today. I bought a 2004 Shen 7/8 gamba flatback last September, and I have enjoyed it immensely. More satisfying to play than anything I ever owned as a student.

I have a Shen s80. I am not an upright player but after hearing Stand by Me one too many times I got the Tone Jones and found a Shen.

I've played Strunal Dvorak basses. They're fairly decent student basses, low price point for the carved ones. Although Shen is from my experience, a better brand.

thanks guys, I've decided for the Shen. it was a bit more than the Strunal but I think it was worth it. I'm stoked.
