Christopher 409 & Rough strings

I exchanged my daughter's Christopher Academy 1/2 today for a 3/4 rental so we can leisurely shop for a bass. The bass is labeled:

3/4 Double Bass Christopher
Hybrid Carved Top
No. 409-0742T
Made in China
Lisle Violin Shop Houston & Pasadena

The only sticker is from the shop.

Anyone ever heard of a Christopher 409? The sales price is $2500 which seems low for a Christopher 400 series. Lisle's website lists the 300 series hybrid at $3100. It's a violin shape btw.

Just curious. My daughter will be back home tomorrow so I can't wait for her to try it out. She's out of town this weekend so I went to pick it up by myself. It's a rental so it's not like she really had a choice. Lisle is seriously short of basses for rental and purchase. Very irritating.

Also irritating that they gave me a 1/2 size bow and I didn't notice it until I got home. It's a very long drive down there and their hours are not convenient.

Also I noticed that the strings in the area just below where the fingerboard ends (where you should place the bow) are rough and pitted. That doesn't seem right. Any thoughts? Are these old strings? I did read the string forum before I asked.

I'll get her private instructor's opinion on Wed. also.

Maybe it's built-up rosin residue. Try cleaning the strings with some rubbing alcohol on a rag, and don't let any of the alcohol get on the finish of the bass's body.

Steal wool does just fine get the oooo (extra fine) then you don't need the alcohol.

I will call concord and get back to you that does seem low maybe there is something wrong with it that brings the price down? 400 series I believe gets up to fully carved I believe. Maybe you should buy it now :-)

Thanks for the info about the rosin build up.

The good news is that my daughter loves her new bass. It sounds good and looks good too. It will be interesting to hear what her private instructor says about it on Wed.

Aaron, let me know if you get any ideas on what a 409 Christopher is. I am curious!

Thanks,

Mary Ann

The 409 may be the first 3 digits of the serial number.

If the strings are pitted and have multicolored silk windings, they are likely crappy strings from the manufacter - they feel like sandpaper. I would replace the strings as they aren't good for the experience of playing music. You can put the old strings back on when you return the bass and keep the bought strings for the next bass.

Check the For Sale forums for strings - many of have sets that we can get rid of. I have two sets of strings (Spiro Solos and D'Addario Hybrids) that I need to get rid of myself. PM me if you're interested.

There have been anecdotes with construction problems in later Chrissy basses. Just be careful. One local dealer here has stopped selling Christophers because of lack of quality. The earlier basses were pretty good. My 300 series is still in great shape.

Long bass ramble

As usual you guys are awesome sources of information. The basses from Lisle are supposed to be set-up with Helicore Orchestral strings. I found this silk color chart on the D'Addario website:

http://www.jdaddario.com/resources/J...olor_Chart.pdf

My daughter's strings are Helicore Pizzacato strings going by color. I assume this is why no amount of rosin seems to provide enough grab for the strings with the new brazilwood bow that they gave us with the 3/4 rental in place of the old fiberglass bow with the 1/2 size rental. Any thoughts on bowing pizz strings?

We have changed classical guitar strings. Can we change double bass strings without causing any problems? I read just do one at a time but don't want to borrow trouble. If we can do it ourselves I'll buy some used ones from the forum. I can probably get Lisle to change out the strings too but that's such a hassle since they are located pretty far from our house. I could probably buy the used strings then just pay the close shop to install them. I'll call and ask.

Her private instructor gave the hybrid rental the ok and said that if that was a random rental that we lucked out. Apparently our bass quest was far easier and cheaper than I expected. Our current plan is to keep this for 2 years (through freshman and sophomore years in high school) then re-evaluate. We'll keep paying rental until the purchase price is reached (actually 80% at Lisle) then buy this bass for $2500. I think I got off easy with this one.

The case that came with the rental is truely pathetic. They only handles are placed where you would carry the bass sideways like a duffle bag. There is absolutely no easy way to grab the case to get it out of the car. Very annoying. Also my daughter is barely 5'2" and she needs all the handles she can get to carry her bass. I tried to order the Upton Deluxe today for a Christmas present for her but they are out of stock. We take it to private lesson once a week and the occasional concert or contest so we don't need maximum padding. Medium padding and stashability (yes, that's a word) are important. Also it would be nice if the bag didn't weigh as much as the bass. It looked like Upton Deluxe would do the trick with Kolstein as my second choice. I can always take the bag to the shoe shop to add some handles in better spots for a short girl but prefer not to have to go to the trouble.

I ordered her a bow for Christmas. Coda Metropolitan. Overkill for a 14 year old? She is absolutely thrilled with the cheap brazilwood upgrade from the original fiberglass so now I'm thinking why spend the money on the Coda.

We selected her high school classes this week and she was excited that there was a jazz band class listed in addition to regular orchestra. Unfotunately that ended up not being accurate but they will have jazz band as an after school activity next year. That should be a fun way to expand her bass skills. The last two summers I've tried to get her up to University of North Texas double bass camp but the dates haven't worked but she did enjoy the University of Texas camp last summer. Hopefully UNT will work this summer.

Ok. Enough about basses. Time to put up the tree. Thanks for your help.

I had seen your post on the bag so I went to the Steve Swan website but they don't list the bag. I'll email him and see if he'll sell the bag and ship it. I found the Presto CB50 at fretwell for $139. Love the handles.

I think Steve is not particularly in the mail order business, but I'll let him confirm that. Any music dealer should be able to order it though.

The handles are great. I have put the bass into and out of my '97 Honda Civic 2 door coupe several times in that bag and there is always a handle available to grab. I have also used it with my "Bass Buggie" wheel thingie and there are two handles placed perfectly when I have the bass in front of me with the neck on my shoulder. I think it's an excellent value.

So do I! Monday night I went to a jam. Rode the bus over there, but it was such a nice night that after the jam I walked the bass home on the wheels of the Bass Buggie. It was about 1.7 miles, and the BB made it practically as easy as simply walking without the bass.
