Crazy flat radius 5 sting kay

Check this out, I was surfing around looking for a oboe for my daughter and, well you know I can't not look at basses. Anyways in the Houston craigslist I came across this

http://houston.craigslist.org/msg/777798636.html

Note they shaved the fb flat and added a bg type pickup. I wanted to be pissed but I found it strangly cool. Kind of like the teeny tiny crotch rocket toy motor bikes. Dorky but cool. Anyways enjoy.

Thumbs down

That's horrible. Makes me want to puke that some ___hole would ruin a nice 5 string Kay like that. At least it could be undone.

I still don't see the point, Kays have a pretty flat radius for a DB anyway, they are fine for pizz as they are. Why would you want a totally flat fingerboard? Firm $2500? I'd give him a firm kick in the butt.

Booooooooo.

Did factory made Kay 5 strings even exist? or is that something some did to cram in another string?

gearhead your right on the mark, total sacrilege. All I can think is some bg player was gifted an chubby, took it to his local guitar guy for changes. It could never be played correctly that way, but on the other hand all it needs is a new fb, not uncommon for older Kay's.
Funny thing, I did a casual last month with a guy who played with Chubby Jackson. Apparently Chubby was quite the jammer up until the end.

Yes, Kay made 5 strings and were called S-51s.

weird how the end of the board is scooped out too. It's a pretty cool bass though, would probably be awesome with a new fb.

I'm getting the impression that a flat fb would be harder to play than a normal one too... It would feel weird, normal ones fit the curve of your hand and fingers so nicely.

"weird how the end of the board is scooped out too."

Matt, that's just the scooped out area under the fingerboard extension! Remove everything down to the fingerboard edge height and that's what all our boards would look like.

Big deal.....
If it only needs a new fingerboard I'd buy it for sure.
I think that bass has been around these parts before, I've seen it somewhere.

Sad how some idiot would ruin a double bass - not only is the fingerboard flat, but it's got an electric bass pickup on it.
