DB in a 4 door '98 Camry?

I'm going to drive to Berkeley tomorrow to pick up a DB rental, but before I do that can someone verify that it is possible to get one in '98 4 door Camry?

That's the idea. However, I found it easier to get the bass in the driver's side rear door, neck first, then into the passenger side where the front seat was folded down. This worked in an old Mazda sedan, and then a Saturn wagon when I couldn't fold down the rear seats because the car had two kiddie seats installed.

Thanks.

Nice to know I don't have to buy a new car to play DB!

(Car geek alert!) That's a 2001-2006 Toyota Camry. Is it right-hand drive? Threw me off at first.

Helpful site, though.

True enough ... it's my previous one. For me, it's just a silver coloured car that works ... and yes, right hand drive. That's normal over here

I'm a bass geek, not a car geek.

My 3/4 fits in my 2007 honda civic.....just barely! Rear passenger seat down flat (so the headstock in almost in the trunk), front passenger seat all the way down. I already measured and a full size upright will not fit.

I have a '93 Corolla, and take my ¾ size double-bass to all my playing gigs. This question has come up before, so you might try putting "Toyota Corolla" into the search engine with "Wil Davis" as the username and seeing what comes up.

No bass on board:

Bass on board:

Here's how to do it: (1) Front passenger seat as far forward as it will go, and (2) Remove headrest (easy, just press the release) (2a) recline passenger seat (thanks michaeln!!) (3) place DB on passenger seat with scroll in the passenger foot-well, and the end-pin pointing at the rear window.

I've also tried this in a Corolla sedan, so I'm sure it will fit in a Camry.

BTW - Strap it in and away you go!!!

HTH and Good Luck!

- Wil

That's pretty much the way I get my bass in my 1997 Honda Civic 2 Door Coupe, although you didn't mention reclining the passenger seat... I definitely have to do that in my car.

I had not moved the seat forward and removed the headrest, but I will add those to the routine. As it is, it goes in there surprisingly easily.

no problem

so long as it's a 4-door, upright bass fits perfectly on the passenger seat, reclined of course. It's work but it's possible.

Also, avoid sticking the head out the window.

My husband just bought a new car and he wanted a small SUV but it had to be big enough to haul our kid's double bass! We measured potential vehicles to make sure it would fit. We are dumb parents. We should have encouraged the kids to play flute, collect stamps and knit instead of bass, surfing and drums.

I fit my bass in a 1993 honda accord regularly, and thats a pretty tiny car. I use the neck first in the passenger seat method as previoulsy mentioned, and its tight, but it works.

All of those things will fit in a decent sized station wagon (Dodge magnum, any volvo wagon[I like the older 940], etc.), with decent (2-3) passenger seats. Just out of curiosity how big did you go?

Some smaller cars aren't wide enough to drive with the bottom bout of a bass in the front passenger seat, that's all.

Wagons with the back seat down are best, though, much safer for the bass. Most SUVs are actually smaller in the back than a large wagon (well, except for the ridiculously huge American SUVs, but who wants to pay the fuel bill on one of those?).

I recline the passenger seat and then pass the bass in (scroll first). I set it on it's side with the strings facing the driver's seat. I adjust the seat back so it is supporting the bass (no stress on neck). The scroll is above the rear seat back (with headrest removed).

I then attach an elastic bungee cord (that I rigged) to the "oh-****" handle. I clamp it to the bag towards the bottom. This keeps the bass "pulled" into the seat back and keeps it from tipping into me on left turns.

I still have the left rear seat and rear luggage area free.

A day late... I get my 3/4 bass in my 98 Camry LE all the time with little trouble.

I transport it in a soft bag, take the head rest off on the back seat passenger side. I lay the passenger seat as flat as possible and slide the bass in on it's side. I position a pillow under a portion of the ribs to take any strain off the neck. The top typically faces me. No need to roll down windows and stick anything out the window. If it is long ride I add pillows on both sides to buffer it from leaning and hitting the shifter or the door.

My challenge will come in February when I get my Nissan Leaf.
