DB called recording bass or bass horn

Does anyone have any knowledge/experience with an upright called "recording bass"? (Also called bass horn). It was described to me as "an upright bass with a bell that bends forward like a Sousaphone". Used in big bands, a bass player would double on DB and recording bass, using the latter on ballards. That's all I know.

Does anyone have a pic?

Sounds interesting!

thanks

More than likely this guy is talking about a very large tuba with a forward facing bell that is very popular with the trad jazz scene these days.

so far as I know, that is a tuba with a bell facing forward like this:

rather than like this:

Of course, it would be great to hook it up to a double bass and play both simultaneously.

Oren Marshall has a custom tuba with a bell that faces forward - he plays anything but trad Jazz!

So I have heard him play squelchy funky bass lines - like Stevie Wonder synth bass and split notes as well as great melodic lines...
