Money isn't a huge issue, as I have time to save up, and I want to go ahead and get a nice instrument, with good tone and construction that I can use in most situations. I'm thinking the $4000-6000 range. I don't necessarily need much advice on brands, it's really up to me to decide if I like it, but I'm wondering, from any fellow Kentuckians, where in this state can you find a good number of double basses to try out? I live in the Lexington area- I can drive to Louisville if I have to. Stores in Lexington itself seem to be lacking, unless you want a red 3/4 double bass.

Anyway, I think you would look quite spiffy standing beside a nice BLONDE BASS .
Have you thought about going with a Blonde...uh uh uh Bass?
I'm going Blonde next time...maybe a Engelhardt Swingmaster! yeah!!!!! |

Your best bet is to drive about 1-1/2 hours north to Cincinnati where there are two excellent double bass shops. There's Nick Lloyd, who is a great double bass luthier. He represents New Standard and Shen basses. There is also the Cincinnati Bass Cellar that has three very fine bass luthiers and usually has several basses in all price ranges in stock that you can check out.

It would depend on when you came, and how many bassists were around. Aside from that, I'd echo robgrow's sentiments. Cincy is the place to go around here. |

And just for reference purposes, I'm interested in classical, jazz, and bluegrass. (I know that's like asking a guitar forum what electric guitar would work best for funk, classical, and Norwegian folk music, but hey, Ι'm sure I can figure out something)

Dustin Williams has a good selection of basses and is not that far from you. |

My son's been doing work for Jack of Jack's BBQ the last few months. My taste buds have been happier lately.
