DB teachers in the Bay Area

Hi all,

Not sure if this is in the correct section..but here I go anyways.

I'm looking for a DB teacher in the SF/ Easy Bay Area to take lessons with over the summer (jazz). I currently take electric bass lessons and while my current teacher does play DB, our primary focus is on electric.

If anyone has any recommendations that would be great.

Thanks,
JC

Barry Green. He's in Oakland. He's about as well rounded as they come. BTW, he wrote the Inner Game of Music. I know he plays a little jazz becasue he jams with a guitarist friend of mine up there. As a teacher? He teaches teachers of bass. Great guy, ISB board member I think. And he runs the Golden Gate Bass Camp every year. Check it out.

^Thanks, I appreciate it.

Hmm, I was thinking of attending that Golden Gate bass camp and attend the John Clayton jazz course, but I'm leaning more towards private instruction. I might just consider taking lessons with Glenn Richman..

Anymore recommendations?

Glenn is a serious cat, you'll definitely get what you pay for! If you want help with upright technique on an intermittent basis, I can help you. I'm in Berkeley, but I'm in and out of town all summer. A lot of the primary upright bass stuff is more physical training than anything, and if you treat it as such, (do it often, not for too long each time, and pay attention to feedback from your body..) you'll have good success.

I think Alex Baum is still in Berkeley, I took lessons with him years ago and found him to be an all around good guy and teacher. He'd be worth looking up...
Good Luck,
John

Barry was also the principal of the Cincinnati Symphony for many, many years.

For Jazz- Recommend Glen Richmond at Jazz School,
John Schifflett in San Jose,
Stewart McCain at Jazz School,

These guys are great instructors & players.
I used to study with Glen for 4 years.

For Classical - Barry Green.. Having met him & talked him at N Cal Bass Club.

+1 with Glenn. He's the man when it comes to DB. The only caveat is that he's on tour this summer with Bobby Hutcherson in Europe so he may not be around.

Seward McCain, John Wiitala, John Schiflett, any of those guys would be good. I don't know the other two but Wiitala is a REEAAALLLY nice guy and very easy going.
