Do you know this maker?

Hello everyone,

This is my first talkbass thread, I usually just read threads that seems interested to me (and there is a lot!). To put you in context, I'm in the market for a new bass since a couple of months, I want a fully carved instrument and I have something like 5-10k in budget. I mostly play jazz but I take classical course and I want to expand my horizon in the future! My current bass is a good plywood with a professional set-up but it lacks the quality of sound of a good carved bass.

My question is related to a double bass I tried today, the owner said it is probably german and maybe 100 years old but he dont really knows. There is a label inside and it says

Antoni Pauli Mulicus

and there is another word below that seems to begin with AU and maybe S so this can be Austria , i'm not sure at all.

Is there someone who knows this maker? It is a very nice bass with a big sound, I appreciate any input, sorry for the long post!

Thanks

Francis

A czech/bohemian maker working in early 1700s. It is not clear if he ever made a bass.

"Pauli, Antonius. Worked in Tachau in 1723."

One of his labels:

Post some pics; we can at least tell you if it looks like a 100 year old German.

Thanks a lot crowsmengegus!

It is exactly the label in the third link! I dont think that the bass is that old so It is probably not the original label but it is weird that someone want to place a fake label from someone so unknown...

Unfortunately I cannot post pic yet as the bass belong to a shop and I dont have any, maybe I can ask them if I can post some next time I visit. Anyway, the bass sound wonderful, it has a dark red finish, a roundback, it's big with a big sound, has purfling on the front and back and very good craftmanship all around!
