I sense there is little actual disagreement here.

Probably not between you and I, anyway.
If, after some 30+ years of taking photos, I authored a book that contained a mix of photo methods, darkroom methods, etc. and mixed in my opinions with the other information, I might make a statement such as: "Harsh sunlight is not generally complementary for portrait photography and softer lighting works better." While this may be a conclusion of my observations and experience over and over again, there is no evidence offered in the statement of opinion. If someone like Edward Weston, who quite often used hard lighting, (if he were alive) read that, he might take exception to it. I think that is the part of disagreement that is in this thread.
Beyond that what appears to have happened is that an experienced fellow has published a book, and some other experienced fellows would like to discredit him if possible, therefore, any opinion in the book that is offered without supporting evidence is being raked over the coals toward that goal. I can offer no evidence, and I should stop trying to defend his opinion by offering a hypothetical analysis that has not been done. It serves no purpose.

By the way, I am one of those who has designed and continues to design the type of experiments to which you refer. That's my day job.

That much was sort of obvious, there, doc. Keep up the good work.
