This is going to be a very difficult question to answer. You could probably get a decent laminated bass for around $1,500. You could get an okay carved bass for approx. $3,500. It really depends on how much you want to spend. There's an instrument for almost any budget, but you'll probably get what you paid for.

I played on a cheap laminated instrument a long time ago, but I wasn't that good of a player. I didn't know any different. It sounded good to me.

When I became more advanced, I tried better instruments and noticed a huge difference. Then I knew it was time to invest more money in my instrument. On a better instrument I am able to play with more dynamics. Also, the instrument speaks faster and clearer. This could also have something to do with the bow I have and the strings I use.

For an average lower end, playable, well setup instrument, you should plan on spending $1600 and up. Anything cheaper than that probably will be a huge mistake. Check the newbie threads.

My first upright was about 1400 bucks. It was laminated, and I thought it sounded good at the time. One year later I bought a carved bass for 4000, and It's unbeleivable. I then went to play my laminate after a few months of playing my carved... it felt and sounded like garbabe, and I can't even sell the thing to anyone.

I would'nt spend any less than 1600 on any DB. Also, a great alternative is getting a laminate bass with a carved top, they are still pretty cheap. They are durable, affordable and can have good tone thanks to the solid spruce soundboard. If possible, get an experienced DB player to accompany you on your search for a bass.
