Question Ebay "Gagliano" seems unlikely to me

This is on Ebay now:

http://cgi.ebay.com/old-double-bass-...QQcmdZViewItem
The seller says: old double bass labeled Joanes Gagliano, Naples 1807

...oh Ken please weigh in here.

It looks like a turn of the century German to me.

there is always a difference between "labeled gagliano" and "gagliano"... especially on ebay
(same thing here: EBAY Pfretzschner bow)

I couldn't agree more. You have a name and you make instruments. Can you be absolutely sure that there was never, ever, a bow maker among the Loveri clan? IMO, Stamping (branding) bows Ken Smith would be more appropriate.
BTW - who does make your bows?

Upon extensive research, I found this http://www.cozio.com/Instrument.aspx?id=5075
Cozio is a very reliable source and in fact,
Giovanni Gagliano was the maker of instruments labeled Joanes Gagliano and the labels also vary over the beginning of the 19th century, especially the spelling of Naples i.e. Neapol.
It is also important to view the work of his sons
http://www.kolstein.com/instruments/...83/index.shtml
The woods are of similar figure, overall bass outline is very close, one being flatback and the other round.
Another strong point is that the body is of figured wood and the original headstock is rather plain.
I am no expert on this matter but I do my research.

It has never seen Naples or any other part of Italy in it's making.

Pictures only do so much.
With the bass in hand one could inspect internal bracing, heel block, and the overall age of the actual wood and finish. Also any repairs or other alteration are generally noted inside.
As far as no Italian characteristics, I see several resemblances to the Gagliano on the Kolstein link above. The top on the supposed "Gagliano" appears to be a 5 piece plate, similar ribs with no edge bracing and the figure is even tighter in spacing, as well as plainer wood on the original scroll. The only thing that stands out is the angle of the neck to the shoulder(possibly altered with the neck graft) and the high edge around the purfling.
