Engelhardt M1 Refin w/ pics

I picked up an Engelhardt M1 a little while back, and the previous owner had done a pretty poor refinish job on it. In fact, the only description i was given of the bass before I bought it was "The world's ugliest upright". My buddy Joel and I decided to refinish it ourselves in his garage.

Here's the results - http://www.joelsprayberry.com/upright/

Let me know what y'all think!

OK I guess. Still pretty ugly IMO.
Myself Id prefer the high school woodshop look over backyard bodyshop vibe.
I think it looked best blonde. Ida prob just clearcoated it at that point.
Whats the deal with the f hole covers? Was that just to keep the paint outa the inside or are you gonna leave it like that?

the f hole covers are removeable. we cut some diamond plate and applied some foam rubber to the back to fit. They work similer to a soundhole cover on an acoustic guitar. Kills feedback.

Well at least it was an Engle and not like a Juzek or a Prescott or something. With all that primer and paint, is the tone still ok?

It sounds fine. I've got the Bob Gollihur Rockabilly pickup installed. acoustically, It sounds as good as it did with the previous refin job.

I like it, the rosewood looks nice against the flat black.

Although, it looks like it actually has a nice flame, and I'm a sucker for a blond....

You got that right...put 4 wheels on it and it'll look like a Camaro I once owned...before it was painted!!

Well, I play this upright in a cover band. We play everything from the Police to Hendrix to U2, but we do it all Bluegrass style. We've got an upright, a banjo, and a guy playing the washboard. For the type of venue that we play, this upright fits right in.

I've always thought a 57 Les Paul Goldtop color would look really cool.

I get the f hole covers now. For the kinda band your in, its a cool bass.

Just goes to show there are no real original ideas. Although, we don't have a banjo or washboard, we have me on upright, 2 acoustic guitars, fiddle, lap steel (also acoustic) and piano. We're working on "Little Wing" tonight. We've worked some Pink Floyd and Doobie Brothers into the set list as well.

That'd be kinda hilarious if you went the whole 9 yards - bindings on both sides of the bass and in the scroll, trapezoid inlay in the neck, and gold hardware everywhere.

Yeah, you would have to have:

-Thick creme binding around the top edge, with the sides and back stained brown.

-creme painted bridge, and one of those Slap-King polished aluminum TP's.

-Neck binding.

-Black scroll.

-Gamba shape.

Somebody should do it....
