Extension vs 5 string

I was wondering how folks would feel about opting for a 5 string instead of a C extension, esp. regarding arco.

I played a Kohlstein 5 string recently - very loud and articulated but the asking price of $12K was pricey.

It depends what your circumstances are. If you're a University student then a five string is impractical considering the amount of solos you're going to be required to play. This could also be true if you're on the audition circuit as a five string bass may be difficult to play the solo aspect of the audition on. I think a five string bass is ideal for people who already HAVE a job. IMHO there's no way you can play as many notes on an extension vs. a five string.
