F. Cervini Plywood Bass - Info? I just picked up this F. Cervini bass today. I assume it is from the Saga instruments family. They still have Cervini cellos and violins listed - I guess they don't make the Cervini basses any more.
This one has an "Anno 19..." label, but no year as I can tell was filled in. It has "HB 50" below and right. "Made in Sri Lanka" is at the label bottom. It has an ebony fingerboard and nickel-plated plate-style tuners. ~41-3/4" mensure.
Seems to be in decent physical shape. Although it was supposedly "professionally set up" by a local bass luthier (according to the previous owner who I know pretty well), I have my doubts with respect to the bridge and soundpost. I don't know if he (luthier) ever worked on these - maybe just the fingerboard. Based on what I have read here and elsewhere:
the nut needs a little work - the E is on the high side. Spacing OK. G is probably a tad low, but acceptable. The fingerboard profile (round) seems OK, as it would play OK with the action down at about 4 mm (although a litle buzzy everywhere). There is a bit more relief on the treble side, but no obvious bad buzzing anywhere.
It needs a new bridge for certain. The adjustable one on it has cheap adjusters, and whoever worked the top edge did a real hack job. The string spacing varies from 23-24 (E-A) to over 28 mm (D-G). The adjusters are probably about at their high limit (about 10 mm thread showing) and the E is still only at about 6.5 mm. The A is at 8, D at 9+ and G at 7.5. The previous owner had already taken off his Velvet strings when I got over there, but I wonder if the bridge was set up backwards. It is also warped a little (towards the flat side), making me even more suspicious about it being on backward. I never looked at it closely before when it was strung up, so I can't be for sure. The top edge is a little on the thin side too.
It appears like the soundpost is not exactly vertical, with the bottom (back) end a bit more towards the neck. The position on the top is in a normally acceptable location. I'm new to this but wonder if I should attempt to move it slightly. I think the fit might be too tight as well. It stayed perfectly in place with no strings on, but I didn't attempt to move it with no string tension on it. I might have to take it down to the shop and have him do the post adjust while I watch.
I put on a set of Obligatos which seem like they will do OK once the other stuff is fixed up.
The table is slightly lower where the bridge feet are than in between the upper and lower shoulders (by maybe a couple mm). I cannot see anything that looks like the bass bar is loose. I can measure it and keep an eye on it. Is this something I should be really concerned about?
Any comments from you experienced players and/or luthiers? Thanks in advance (and I will fil in my profile soon - I promise).
