After months of not-so-patient waiting, my hawkes finally came in last night and I got a chance to really play it in and take some pictures this morning. The soundpost had fallen out in shipment unfortunately, but I was able to set back in place where Upton's marking was with a fair degree of success. I'll be takign it in to Bob Ross sometime this week to get the post professionally adjusted for optimum fit.
Despite all that, the bass is sounding pretty good- loud and deep bass. I have it strung with Obli's. The E string feels slightly weak and I may replace it with a higher tension string, not sure. I'll see what Bob thinks. I'm overally very happy with the feel and the sound of the bass- it has a good rich pizz tone and respectable arco tone as well. It sings far better than my Englehardt, and the sustain is much better. I find the neck much more comfortable as well.
I had the stain done in extra-dark with an antiqued fade, and Gary and Jack did a great job getting it the way I had in my head. The flat-black paint detailing in the f-holes and pegbox are a nice touch. The fit and finish is overall very good and quality of the fingerboard and tailpiece are top-shelf- GORGEOUS ebony that is smooth as glass. The hardware is solid and of good quality, but not anything really special/fancy, which is what I would expect in the price range. I was very impressed with the bridge- the carving on it is much more detailed and interesting than most bridges I have seen in this price range, and the wood has a very nice grain to it.
I will see if I can get the bass to Paul sometime soon and then he could give a much more qualified opinion, if he so desires of course.
And of course.. pictures...The color is a little darker than the pictures show, FYI.
And yes, I have a rather musical family.. cello, piano, and french horn are in the background. I made sure to pick up my dirty socks this time so Ray or Chris doesn't lecture me, .

One thing that I found a bit annoying is just how tight the upton cass fits on teh upper bout once the bridge is in place. I feel like I'm having to force the zipper to the edge of tearing something to get it to zip around the upper bout. I realize the Hawkes has an unusually wide upper bout on it, but Upton did make the case to their specs so it seems to me it should fit with less hassle. I may be missing somethign here, but I'll check with them on monday.

Sure is a great looking bass. I'm wondering about the effect of the reverse tuners on the E string tension. Curious to know what you end up with there. Thinking about Spiro Mittels maybe with a Stark E.
I do like the finish on your bass but I may go a bit more chocolate. It's all personal preference, but they do a great job for the money.
They tell me a Moradian bag will fit this bass. We shall see.
Go play it. Learn some great licks and post something we can listen to. |

All the best with your new bass, its beautiful. I was so tempted to buy one of those until I ended up with my Cleveland, you have yourself a very nice bass

The single tuners were standard. They have switched over from the plates as far as I know.

I also have the dark varnish on my Upton Hawkes Hybrid, and it really looks great. I've had mine for a few months now, and it just keeps getting better. It's a pretty amazing bass, especially considering the price range.
I have medium Spirocores on my Hawkes Hybrid, and ended up replacing the E string with a Spiro stark, which really sounds great. Incidentally, Spirocores sound amazingly warm on this bass and bow exceptionally well. I would think that Obligatos would be too light for the UB Hawkes Hybrid, but then I'm not a big fan of those strings. Higher tension strings would help get the most out of this bass IMO. |

Keep your bass very comfortable so it will cooperate as the two of you make some music. We want to hear what the two of you sound like together. |
