Finally, my own bass! Meinel content :)

Hi there

I know I posted this thread some time ago, but a couple of weeks after my teacher convinced me to try out jazz bass. Let's just say I couldn't have been more happy for listening to his advice!

Just did my double bass exam and I got an A (Norwegian high school level) You can hear some it here: myspace.com/fblikeng

Previously I've rented a bass, a cheap Höfner actually, a OK hybrid bass, and that's the bass you can hear at my myspace.

But now I got my own 20 year old Meinel, made in Germany, fully hand carved! I'm simply in love. The tone is amazing, so deep it makes the pictures on the walls in my room shake, yet it's sooo tight. The sustain is actually very good! The higher tones is so bright and singing. The sound when playing with a bow is also very nice. It's really easy to play! The Höfner i rented was a 3/4, this Meinel is 4/4, yet the Meinel neck is actually thinner, and has less spacing than the Höfner.

Here she is:

I'm so in love with this beautiful instrument

That's really nice, and it looks like the 4/4 isn't too big for you at all.

Thanks guys

Yeah, the size is perfect for me. It didn't take long before all the intervals were intonated

Very nice bass. I have had a 3/4 Meinel since the mid nineties. The back isn't as nicely flamed as yours and I think it may be a hybrid. Although I now have other more 'advanced' basses it served me very well in the early days and I still take it out for the occasional gig. It is very strong on A and E without booming and amplifies very well. I can set it up to sound like a Fender Jazz then back it off a bit to sound like a very strong double bass. It cuts through the loudest band. Enjoy!
