finger positions

Hi!

Am new to the world of double bass, and was wondering if there is some online chart showing the positioning of the different notes on the 4 strings of the bass (i.e. showing you where to put your finger in order to play that note).
Thanks for the info!

Thanks for these. That's the stuff I found online myself, but I was looking for something where you can actually see the fingerboard as it really is. In this abstract depiction, I'm still not quite sure for example what the distance between the 1st and the 2nd finger really needs to be etc.

There's no one answer to that question... it depends on lots of aspects of your bass, its setup (shape of the fingerboard and height of the strings at each note), and what strings you're using. Even on how loud you're going to play the next note. There's no way to even calculate it precisely... you have to practice matching your sound to an in-tune note, or to a digital tuner, and then remember the feel of where you are.

Roughly, though, the first C on the G-string is about 1/4 of the way to the bridge, the D is 1/3 (these are the notes under your tuning harmonics), and the octave is 1/2 the string.

Edit: also, first finger in first position is an octave above the string two below (A on the G string, for instance), you can set out a few notes near the heel by reference to the curve in the back of the neck, and everything else you can find by playing intervals off some other note that has a reference.
