| There's no one answer to that question... it depends on lots of aspects of your bass, its setup (shape of the fingerboard and height of the strings at each note), and what strings you're using. Even on how loud you're going to play the next note. There's no way to even calculate it precisely... you have to practice matching your sound to an in-tune note, or to a digital tuner, and then remember the feel of where you are.
Roughly, though, the first C on the G-string is about 1/4 of the way to the bridge, the D is 1/3 (these are the notes under your tuning harmonics), and the octave is 1/2 the string.
Edit: also, first finger in first position is an octave above the string two below (A on the G string, for instance), you can set out a few notes near the heel by reference to the curve in the back of the neck, and everything else you can find by playing intervals off some other note that has a reference.
