Fingerboard shape?

I've been shopping for a double bass for a while and most of the ones I've seen have fingerboards that are angled under the E string. What's the reason for this and is it usually found on cheaper basses? I recently looked at a Kremona (Bulgaria) with a solid top and I liked it except for this fingerboard. Thanks!
