first date

I had my first date with a New Standard Cleveland last night and all I could say was "Where have you been all my life?".

Muchas gracias Arnold and Wil!

Who picked up the check? Or, did you go Dutch?

I have a date with Arnold in a few days. I wonder if he's buying? When I'm thru there, I will be a poorer man than when I walked in..

But will he still respect you in the morning?

Ken... when you walk into Arnold's shop, does he say hello, or does he go directly to "ka-ching!"

Neither! I get this look on his face and I can hear him thinking "there goes the rest of my day!"

I think Wil picked up the check (mine) and took it to the bank.

Not to go OT, but I did some bass duets yesterday with Bill McCrossen who had Arnolds first bass. Great sound and look but the tonal adjustment and action were out of this world.

Welcome to the club.
I hope the more you play it the more you like it. Works that way for me.

From everything I had read on this forum, I was almost certain I would love love the sound. What blew me away was that given my string choice (Permanents on the bottom and plain gut on top) and a brief description of my right hand pizz style, Arnold was able to tailor the setup so well. I guess he must have done this once or twice before .

Arnold is a very open minded luthier when it comes to the players set-up needs. Arnold is also a fine Bassist in his own right and has played professionally with many notable musicians.

He can walk the walk as well as talk the talk!

Congratulations. Some day...some day.

BTW, when I had my Upton, that was exactly the string choice I used.

I'm curious...what did you tell Ahnold about your pizz technique? How would that necessarily effect the set-up? I know that I play pretty much with my index finger pointed straight down and follow with the middle for faster runs. I play that way on an EUB as well and it feels the same to me, except for the strings.

Yes, it is a laminate and it does sound killer. More power to drive.

I play with my index and middle fingers in unison 90% of the time and they are pretty much perpendicular to the strings. I have a tendency to pull the strings at an angle down toward the FB rather than straight across. This is compounded when I play the E string since my thumb gravitates under the FB. If the fingerboard is not shaped properly, it can lead to the E rattling.
I notice this less with a beveled board. This bass has no bevel but the radius and scoop are working out very well. No rattle.
