A first.....for me

Had dinner last night with friends and while eating, a piano and acoustic bass duo began to play. Sounded great but I could not see them as they were up at the front of the restaurant. Left the table for a moment to see who was playing and was shocked when I saw......

A left handed upright!

I have never seen one before. Has anyone else? I imagine they are just restrung and maybe get a new bridge.

Anyway - looked weird - sounded great.

True 'leftys' need to have the bass bar under the E bridge foot... this entails taking the top off the bass, removing the old bass bar and installing the new one on the other side. Soundpost gets flipped as well.

For some unknown cosmic reason, I've done three leftys in the last three months for three completely unrelated left-handed bassists. No complaints... just odd.

I haven't seen or heard of any... it is entirely possible, though.

Doubt it, lefties were considered evil then.

I've heard of lefty basses but never seen one. Leftys just conform to the right hand style as far as I can see.

Depends what period we're talking about...I'm guessing Nick is referring to early plainchant.

i know nothing about db et al, but as the question was 'were there any left hand db's during the classical timeperiod' i would suggest no, there weren't, as being left handed was socially unacceptable until the beginning of the 20th century. i might be wrong though
