Funkiest Bridge Ever?

Anyone ever seen a bridge like this? Just bought this old Epiphone B4. Some previous owner painted the entire body black, and put on this bridge. Anyone ever seen one like it? The bass sounds and plays well beyond my skill level....but I'm considering a new bridge. Am I crazy to mess with it, or would a pro probably be able to make it even better with a more conventional bridge?

looks like you may have a neck projection issue. maybe the previous owner made it to accomodate the low projection?

What is a neck projection issue?

Forgive my ignorance. What exactly is a "neck projection" issue? From what I can decipher, that suggests a less than optimal neck angle. Is this ballpark?

At the risk of sounding like a crazy person - isn't that just a picture of a black violin?

Here's a pic of the body of the bass. I have a lot of close-ups, but not much of the "overview" stuff.

yup, if you were to extend the fingerboard to the bridge and measure the distance from the top of the inst. to the extended imaginary line of the fingerboard it should be, for a 3/4, approx. 150mm. yours looks like alot less, and my guess is that you are losing alot of volume because of it. but if its solid and feels good to you so far, id leave it alone. a luthier might have trouble finding a bridge that squat, and it sucks cutting a bridge down that much to make it work.

I think it looks lower than normal because the feet are so funkily widespread!
The feet on a standard bridge are about 150mm outside edge to outside edge and this should correspond more or less with the separation of the inner eyes of the FFs

The tailpiece is pretty cool... the bridge looks like a cob job.

Here's a closeup of the tailpiece.

That's a "4" stamped in the badge, with no "B".

What is the height of the bridge from the centre of the top to the highest point?

And yes, I think you should get the bridge changed to a standard one, if you are going to try to learn to play it properly.

Another best thing about that track is that it marked the reunion of Sam and Dave. Yeah, the funkiest bridge ever with very soulful vocals....it actually lays very nicely on the bass if you try to mimic it!

Obviously, the bridge on this old Epi is homemade. A little trip to the luthier should make the bass sound and play 100% better.

I just now got it. Yikes. Pathetic. But you're right...100% funky.
