Gamba vs. Violin vs. Busetto -

newbie doing his homework towards a first double bass

I tried search and failed. Can someone point me to the pro's & con's discussion?

I surmise there has to be an existing one?

If not, can anyone comment on the differences?

THANKS,
Hal

It's all about aesthetics-- well almost-- as violin corners can be prone to damage. That's never been an issue for me because I'm fanatic about bass-care. There is no difference in terms of sound or playability or anything functional.

Edit-- I just went to the Basses forum and typed "violin corner vs." in to the search box. I found this and this and this. I'm sure you could find more.

I do like my violin corners for picking the bass up from it's side, it's like having a nice secure handle whereas my gamba was a little on the slippery side...

Yup. Though here's what you should do. Play some basses. Pick one that sounds good.

Gambas are for he-men and she-women, violin corners are for pussies, and busetto are for nancy-boys, IMO.

It's all about cornerless basses. Even gamba corners are for pussies.

I kinda get this. After having lusted for a busetto a long time, I got a Kohr hybrid a few years back. It never quite had the volume it should've. Then my spouse claimed it had "love-handles". Hadda sell it after that.

Cheers,

Hey Eric,
That's hilarious.
I do find busettos lacking robustness and raw power tho.

Only if he went by "Scotty" instead of Scott.

This was already settled here:

Gamba vs Violin Shape

Bass had it right. Play anything without violin corners at your own peril.

I disagree with drurb, there are functionality concerns.

I find it much easier to stand on my hybrid with violin corners as opposed to my old gamba ply.

I sit corrected! (I never stand on mine).

The rounded corner on the lower C bout of the busetto reminds me too much of the relationship between my mid-section and my belt. Violin corners or nothing for me.
