George Herman Stradivarius copy

A local is selling one of these basses and I want to see if anyone has an opinion on it and how much it should cost.
He said that there are no cracks or buldges. What should I offer him?

George Herman Stradivarius never made basses.
Post some pics and you should get some good input.

Although Strad never made a bass, marketing geniuses for a century or more have been using his name to give an air of quality to entry level instruments. Value-added is a term that applies, but that doesn't mean this may not be a good bass for you.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of...us_instruments

It looks like a Chinese or possibly German laminated bass in pretty good condition. Problem areas would be:
1) Broken or re-set neck. Look for evidence of repairs at the heel area at the top of the back.
2) Dyed maple or otherwise cheap fingerboard. It looks like ebony, but the pics don't show much.
If you can post pics of these two areas that would help.

Assuming these are good, I would feel comfortable offering a between $750 and $1000.

What are they asking for it?

P.s. the bass would benefit from having the stiff tailpiece wire replaced with flexible cable and probably a set of strings. Also, sight down the fingerboard from nut to bridge. If there are any high or low spots it should be dressed. These things cost money, so figure that in.

I think the seller should just about always name an asking price. It's not up to the buyer to set a price at what he/she think it's "worth." Rather, set it at what you'd reasonably like to pay. Assuming everything is intact and in good shape (see previous posts), set it at $600-700. Why not? That would be a fine deal on what seems like a so-so ply bass. Please don't misunderstand-- I'm not suggesting that you take unfair advantage. It's just that in situations like this, where a buyer is asked to set the price, it often advantages the seller who has not done his own homework.
