"Germany East" Bass?

I just bought this lamainate lacquared bass with ht einside lable reading 'Germany East". In is acutally preety good, strong low, some growl, and feels solid. It is light in the midrange, and has a weird medium size V shape neck.
Does nay body know anthing about such a bass?

Well, you see a while back there was this place called East Germany, and there were some basses made there, perhaps in Markneukirchen. There is a great discussion on the whole history of stringed instruments in Germany on the Eastman Strings web site. Extremely informative synopsis. It is also plausible that your instrument had other Eastern European origins and is simply labeled Germany East.

Most German made laminates I have played live up to the description of your bass. I have seen a Hofner that was very responsive, and some others that had Mittenwald labels under various names. Usually really well built and better sounding than most other plywood instruments. Congratulations on the find.
