getting back in after 6 years out
I'm getting back into bass after 6 years out due to school and travel.
Previously I played symphonic, jazz, swing, and bluegrass, and folk
My local shop has a some nice 7/8 for rent ( I'm 6'7" tall)
They also have a couple of c extension 7/8 for rent.
I will be playing mostly solo for the next year or two, would a c extension be worth it? Tune in fiths and play some cello pieces? For my own enjoyment, or just stick with standard tunning?
That doesn't really give us much to go on.
Given that you're an experienced player and want to get back in, why are you considered rental rather than purchase?
Where do you live?
Your height has little to do with whether you should be looking at a "3/4" or "7/8." Bass sizes are hardly standardized. It's more about vibrating string length with 42" being typical. Forget the fractional sizes and get the bass that "fits" you in terms of string-length, body size, design, playability, and sound.
As for the tuning, that really is up to you and the level of your expertise. Others here can comment with greater depth about that decision.
I'm not going to attempt to wade into those questions, but I'm glad to hear that you're getting back in. And I'm with you . . . I just got back in this week after 15 years away from double bass.
Stick with the tuning You are comfortable with.
Get the bass that you can rent that feels best in your hands.
Get a coach to help get your bow work back to where it was.
Do what feels right and fills your heart with joy!
+1 for bowing coaching. I found that the toughest part of jumping back into playing after a 20-year hiatus. Enjoying every minute of it.
