Question Getting my first upright

cheers everyone, I am researching DB's like crazy. I have been playing electric basses at the semi-pro level since I was a teen and just starting upright.

I want a bass that I can beat around a bit, I will be playing it til my fingers bleed until I can play all my bass lines I've been playing on electric bass in my folk/rock/bluegrass band on upright. Then I will be gigging with it weekly, in small little bars and clubs, that's the idea.

Budget is important- under $1000 would be nice

As long as it can be a decent-good amplified tone. And An exceptable acoustic tone, I am happy.

I play jazz a bit too, and would like something with a good enought sound to play with some jazz cats down the line, or whenever I can.

I have considered and researched the lower level EUB's like the palatino, and terrified by them.

I feel that palatino's, Carlo Robellis, and the like may be silly, but what should I be looking at?

Used engelhardt? any suggestions would be huge!!! Thanks a bunch.

Dano--

Congratulations! You are the 3,000th person to post on TalkBass with the same question! You win a set of weedwhacker strings and a busted BassMax pickup. You can pick up your prizes here.

Seriously, what you should do first is sit down and study the newbie links at the top of this forum. Then come back with questions. If you're thinking of buying a new bass, you rock-bottom net outlay will be around $1500 for a decent instrument. Buy from a bass shop, not a "music store."

Holdaniel, here's a used Englehardt, do you live in Austin, Texas?

Hey DRURB! Are Bassmaxes prone to breaking? Is there something you don't like about them?

Just curious, 'cause I installed a used Bassmax last week, and I like it just fine, but it seems to be making a high pitched ringing noise.

Yeah, so's my head after reading, as drurb said, the 3,000th thread on this subject.

I must apologize, but this response was just plain rude. I am new to this side of the bass world as well and I would never expect this kind of response. Questions are for people to learn. Even if it is the 3,000 time it has been asked. How many times can we be asked what the best bass is?? I mean really, if someone has a question, they want to know and they came to the right place to ask, Right??

Oh, really, grow a sense of humor! I even included the smiley face. I pointed him to the newbie links (which I think he should have consulted first) and invited him to come back with questions. The levity was also for the benefit of the regulars around here who keep seeing the same type of post over and over again.

Nope. Just frustrated that our mods have taken the time to make Newbie links (which contain some very relevant information) available and it seems the resources aren't used. If you have an interest in learning to play a DB, please read those links first, then ask questions.

Do you personally have such an interest?

Nope, not there yet, so no discount. Let's see--I answered first in a humorous fashion and then provided a serious answer. Don't know why that would be like the response of a senior citizen. You sound like you gotta get out more.

Yup, right here. I left out the humor when I answered you. That seems to be what got some folks' noses out of joint. I simply suggested that you consult the newbie links and offered you some advice. I hope the answers you got were helpful.

Interesting that holdaniel didn't complain about any offense.

alrighty. Yeah I've been doing research on talk bass quite a bit already. Just wanted to see if maybe I'd get some different info bassed on my specific needs over some of the other people who have made the transition and written about it.

I felt I was different and somehow I could pull off getting a palatino beater and modeling a good amplified tone, but everyone seems to just get enamored with uprights as soon as they get a good one, so getting the "real thing" seems right.

Haters, your trying to keep it a little more fresh in here, I got it.

Well, I guess I just have to be more serious. I sure hope you didn't take offense. Anyway, it's not so much that we want to keep it fresh as it is that the newbie links contain a wealth of info that need not be rehashed again and again. In addition, the answers to "what should I buy" can go on forever and a multitude of posts would be devoted to narrowing down what you want/need. The newbie links help folks do that so that more targeted questions can be answered here.

In general, getting a cheapie bass and trying to amplify it to achieve a good tone is poor economy. The bass you buy could just plain implode on you and you'd end up throwing away your money.

Sounds like you're looking for an entry-level ply bass. There are many threads here discussing specific brands.

Man, we're not haters here....We are great lovers of the double bass. Please, for your own benefit, listen to drurb...He's takin' the time to show concern and care for your situation, as we all are. Over here, like the instrument we play, some of us are a bit older and maybe a bit saltier. Search some of my posts if you want salt. We feel some humor and edginess adds to the richness of our forums....We are real people, just like you.
As drurb, says...take advantage of the Search engine at the top of your screen and dig around to get a taste of the care, concen, and sometimes, the insanity that goes on around here. We are a pretty close community and you're more than welcome to join us. You may need a little thick skin at times, but it's worth it.

And, Cyrus, I am A senior citizen...but i'd put my playing up against yours ANYTIME.

That's the way I took it.

BTW, I thought the thread was about bringing home your first DB, a day that I dream of and that this economy works against.

Actually, DRURB's been the point man, the first responder, on more of these virgin thread post events that all the rest of us put together.... he's been patient and tactful throughout. He deserves props for that, because I certainly don't have the patience that he's showed over the years.

Me, on the other hand....my wisea$$ switch goes off, and then someone gets their feelings hurt.
