The natural way

I suggest you consider the natural value of fresh air.

The bag for my upright arrived with a very strong odor. I opened all the zippers and pouches, stretched the open bag across wooden back chairs (no upholstery), and left for three days in a room with two open windows. It made a huge difference. I almost always leave my upright out of the bag in a room with an open window, and that seems to get the gig smell out.

Fresh air might help with your smoke smell situation.

I really do not want to damage the wood or affect the tone. Thanks.

The Nature's Miracle line of products, sold for removal of pet odors can work wonders on many things. Don't think I would use it on a bass but I would surely try it on a bag that had stubborn odors from smoke or animals. I would test a bit first to make sure it didn't cause problems with the material. I almost always use the Nature's Miracle products diluted as they usually are only needed full strength on the most stinky things.

YMMV

Sorry to go off topic, but what in the heck does YMMV mean?

Your Mileage May Vary - kind of a standard disclaimer

Ok, thanks. I've been wondering.
