I looked for Mittenwald China but couldn't find it.

Seriously, it is probably not a good deal but there is no way to know without seeing it.
My suspicion is you're looking at a chinese time bomb with a German name to prey on an unsuspecting and inexperienced buyer.

Gewa is in Germany and has European craftspeople working in it. They used to run an ad in DOUBLE BASSIST, Mittenwald is an area in southern Germany that has pretty long history of bass building.
I think whatcha got here is a contemporary German factory bass...

i think something to consider in this case, is that you get what you pay for. It's pretty rare to see a functional double bass for under $1000. it is extremely unlikely that it will be a high end professional quality instrument. however, it could be a very practical beginner bass. so go and check it out and see if everything is in tact. or better yet, if you are unexperienced with uprights and what to look for, try to bring someone with you who is experienced in the matter (maybe your teacher, or a friend). make sure the bass feels and sounds good to you, because let's face it, having an instrument that you are happy and comfortable with will make you want to practice more, and just make you an all around better musician.

+ gewa is a trading company that also buys and sells chinese basses
i´m sorry to say that, but being located in germany does not automatically mean doing quality work, and mittenwald has also a long tradtion of trading/dealing/relabeling etc. with everything in the music business that promises profit
(notwithstanding that very much very fine instruments were (are) being made there)
