I disagree. I currently play on a plywood bass that fits my needs, though I would prefer something fully carved. When I had the opportunity to play a mid-18th century Italian bass just out of restoration, I was shocked to realize just how much better I was playing and sounding. A teacher of mine even said sincerely "when did you get so good?" while playing this instrument.
I know good tone comes from a good player, but ANY beginner would sound a thousand times better playing a singing old Italian than a $1000 plywood bass. You can be a decent player and still sound as good or better than a good player if you are playing an instrument that is of higher quality and better set up. In my experience this is much greater than in the electric bass world.
