A good starter upright?

Hey guys, I've been playing electric for almost 4 years, and i like to think I'm okay at it...but I've always loved the sound of upright, too. I've tried it with school uprights before (I'm a junior in high school) and I could actually play fairly well in tune to about 8th or 9th position (much better than I expected of myself ).

My question is, what are some good starter uprights out there? I'm not necessarily looking for cheap per se, but preferably something under $5000? Is that reasonable? Some ideas?

Friendly advice...

And just remember, folks: "Friends don't let friends play Cremona or Palatino basses."

+1 add to that "friends also don't let friends take up double bass without taking lessons."
