Got it and I'm RRREADDY

Alright I just got my new acoustic bass, and when I open the box it was not put together. All the parts seem to be here, there's even the round stick that goes inside.
I'm freeking dying to put it together and start playing, can anyone tell me the best way to put the notches in the bridge for the strings.

Also should I get a bow? And can anyone suggest a beginners DVD, there are no good how-to video's on youtube, grrrrr
I'm sooo pumped, now with the doghouse Im a triple threat, guitar/bass/acousticsbass

whoah, hold your horses

firstly do you feel confident enough to set up the bass? did it come with the guidelines for sound post placement and bridge placement? are the bridge feet already shaped to fit the bass?

you may be dying to put it together but dont go hacking into wood until youve got it all planned out

I didn't think there were any DIY basses around that weren't cheap/chinese. :/

So let's take a quick guess as to where this bass was manufactured and how much it cost.

OK, OK!!! just kidding. Ignore that advice.

WHAT did you do???????????

It will be very difficult for you to assemble a playable instrument without patience and a lot of research. Please begin by reading this:
Newbie Links: SETUP

And Matthew is a fine luthier (bass maker).

Good luck to you.

Start looking for a luthier who can do a set up for you. I would not recommend doing it yourself as it sounds like you are new to the instrument. I am not new and wouldn't do all that myself.

Matthew, he has to glue the parts together before he can slap it.

"round stick" is a warning sign...

The route to getting in playing fastest is probably paying a professional to do it.

I would do it myself, but that's because I wouldn't mind it taking longer, and I think it would be a really good learning experience. But it still probably wouldn't come out quite as well, and I'd have to do a lot of reading.

Ask yourself which one of those paths sounds better to you.

No gluing I just put the bridge on. Pretty easy just like the instructions say to. I gouged the bridge with a file so the strings sit on it fine. The picture in the instructions show that the stick goes inside the air hole. Do this really need to be there?

My main problem is that the instruction is written in Japanese, but the pictures are good enough I guess.

I live in beautiful sunny LA are there any guitar shops that specialize in acoustic bass?

PS - Shout' 2 Maty Tukr for the mad video hookup

I'm not sure what you paid for this bass, but you can easily cause more damage to it than it's worth if you don't set it up properly.

The stick is called a soundpost and yes it absolutley needs to be there. A) for sound and B) for structural support. Failure to install it correctly will result in problems.

Even having "gouged" the string slots may cause issues. If they are smooth and wide enough they can bind the string and cause it to break. Bass strings are not cheap.

You really should take this to a luthier.

MONRC,
Short and sweet: Take some time to read the newbie links I posted above. Learn what you can about the Double Bass so won't call an FF an airhole or a soundpost a stick. Most of us who have been around a few years learn something new almost every day. You will get much better advice here after you have invested some time on your own.

You really should have said something about screwing parts down or gluing the bridge to the top if you REALLY wanted to convince us you were a noob...
