gotz/goetz carved bass

I just picked up this gotz/goetz fuly carved bass last night off the local craigslist. its clearly a little beat up, as someone took some sandpaper to it, and the bridge has had more viagra than prescribed. I'm going to take it to a luthier this weekend and get a new bridge and string it with guts. I'm curious as to the value of it, and if its worth repairing and refinishing the bass. I didn't pay much for it, so if its not worth refinishing its no loss.

If you want to know the value when it's in solid condition/setup/finish, and if it sounds really good, I'd say upwards of 12k, maybe more if it's really exceptional. Of course in this economy... There are a few of these in Chi (this has been discussed recently on smithbassforums.com) and they are in the 7-10k range.

It's hard to judge from the pictures because I'm on my phone, but I think you made a pretty sweet score.

See, now, you broke my personal rule: if you stumble onto a steal like this, you're not supposed to tell me about it!

But seriously, if the "appraisals" are right, congratulations! You're looking at an instant 1500% return on investment.

That's a great price, but the bass might need a few thousand to set it straight. A pro refinish is expensive, touch up less so. If the top needs to come off, expensive.

Does it sound good now?

So how many unrepaired cracks and where are they? Soundpost or bass bar cracks?

Take it to a couple good luthiers and get suggestions and prices.

If it sounds great now, congrats, it could work out well. Get the work done right and you'll have a seller if you ever decide to part ways.

the top was off about a year ago to repair a crack on the lower treble side that ran up to the f hole. the work was done by stein on vine. there are two unrepaired cracks on the side up near the neck, and one or two on the side near the bottom, that dont appear to go all the way through. the top is coming a bit loose near the neck join, however, it just needs some glue.

is it just me, or does it seem that the neck was reset with a higher overstand?
any info from the seller on who did the work?
You might want to take her to a very good bass luthier to make sure all previous repairs have been done adequately. Also, to evaluate repairs that need to be done/redone. Verify age and pedigree, etc.
seems like a good deal, just make sure to get her to a luthier and have the neccessary work done to put her into top shape.

Stein on vine which is a reputable dealer did the work for the previous owner. before that is anyones guess. the neck may have been reset, however the overstand appears normal when compared to my other basses. I am hoping to take it in on saturday for a check up/estimate for repair/apprasial and a new bridge and maybe guts. I'm pretty stoked to have more seasoned eyes look it over.
