Greetings from the South!

Hi Everybody,

Greetings from South Africa!

I used to play the cello until about a year ago, and even then, I was always
drooling over the DB, and now I want to get myself one to mess around with, and,
if I cannot find a teacher, start to try and teach myself using my cello skills.
I've been reading through the forums for a while now, and I realise that pretty
much the majority of people have very strong (negative) opinions about Chinese
instruments. My problem is that in the WHOLE country, there pretty much are only
two suppliers for UB's that I can find. Only one of them ship to my local music
store, and they ONLY supply Palatino. The other is over 1500km away.

I want to hear some opinions from folk who DO play them, and whether you honestly
recommend them or not. PLEASE can we not focus on only the negatives... Sure there
have to be some positives as well?

Many thanks,
Waltjie.

Welcome!
I wouldn't come the the conclusion that there is a univerally negative mind set regarding Chinese basses around here. Many people feel that Christophers and Shens are decent enough instruments and that is my experience as well. If you are starting out with one of these, you won't go too far wrong, IMHO. Just get the best bass you can with a really good set up. I'll bet there are some good teachers around as well.

+1

Just be sure of a good setup. Some reputable dealers will ship worldwide.
Study the newbie links, as they are a wealth of information.
