hal robinson's bass

A few months ago, I attended a bass seminar where Harold Robinson of the Philadelphia Orchestra performed. He is a superb musician, and he clearly has a bass worthy of his talent. It projected beautifully, and its tone was marvellous. Does anyone have information about Mr. Robinson's bass?

I saw Hal play a recital about 6 years ago and he was using a bass that was handed down to him by his father. Unfortunately I don't remember anymore information about it.

The one that I saw him with didn't have an extension and the varnish looked pretty dark. I don't think it was a very big bass.

I would really like to see/own/play a gargoyle head bass, would be really nice to play it in Beethoven's symphony number 5 :P, very evil looking...

The bass Mr. Robinson played at the seminar didn't have the carving Mr. Smith mentioned. It was a large, dark brown, powerful sounding instrument. I don't know how to determine the origin of instruments by their form, f-holes, scrolls, etc. And I gather from the Forum that labels and reputed provenance aren't reliable forms of identification. Is there a book you can recommend that provides information on bass identification, or is this the kind of knowledge that can only be gained by experience?

Who needs a book when you have this forum? Keep reading the threads and you're bound to learn a bunch about how to identify instruments. The more you visit, the more basses you'll see and the more characteristics you'll be able to identify regarding place of origin, maker, age, etc. If you're still looking for books, I'm sure someone will recommend a few.

Here is a pic of Hal's bass with the Gargoil.
Just hit the next button a couple of times.

Hal's bass

Hal showed me a bass a few years ago that he said was Italian. It had gamba shaped ribs with violin or Italian corners.
And it had a beautiful tone.

I took lessons from Hal at the University of Houston back in the 80s. Later I took lessons from William Black there.

I should be able to play a lot better than I do...

I know this is off topic but William Black isn't the same guy as the Bill Black of Elvis Presley fame, is he?

No, this Bill Black played with the Houston Symphony and is well known around these parts. No relation to Elvis' bassist as far as I know.

That's what I figured but I couldn't resist asking.
