Hard Case Options?

Hello,

Looking into getting a hard case for my 3/4 , but can't seem to find them online. Not looking for a "flight" case, just something more protective than a gig bag.

Any brand names I can look for would be helpfull.

Thanks

Flight Case

Check out Kolstein Music. They make very durable flight cases.

Jim Laabs music has one: http://www.jimlaabsmusic.com/

Fantastic Musical Instruments has one: http://www.gotofmi.com/uprightbass.html

If you decide to purchase one, please report your buying experience and general impression of the case. This is something I wouldn't mind having as well.

I have one from FMI - ok for occasional use; I wouldn't want to tour with it week in and out; not as strong as Gage's or Jacques Gagnon's Cremonasia model. Still, if it's once a month or so use (or less) it's a good deal.

I have seen a thick/rigid foam case that was very protective, you might even be able to use it as flight case. Unfortunately I don't know who makes it. You basically close it with a zipper just like a soft case.

Anyone?

I'm curious as to what you are looking for, since there are usually only two cases for double basses: a hard flight case, or a soft case. I've seen one case that looked like a flight trunk but was much smaller and fit snug around the bass without much protection. Maybe that's what you're looking for? Haven't seen that in years though, and that was the only I've ever seen.

If you want a sturdy soft case probably the best bet is a Reunion Blues case. It has thick foam padding and lots of leather protectors around the corners and handles. I think most people consider them the most protective soft case (?), but I can't say for sure. They are expensive too.

If you want a flight trunk the carbon fiber Stevenson trunks are good, also I think the Gage trunks work well too. The Kolstein trunks are incredibly heavy and awkward, although I heard he changed his design (?)

There are a couple hard cases (not flight) I have found, but they are stirofoam jobbers, like the FMI one. Not too sure about that.

Considering the bulk of a bass hard case I may just find a better foam lined gig bag. Bob G. has a nice "pro" bag for $250on his site, I may just go with that.

On sale for $295. Shipping is a killer as you might expect ~ $160.

Reunion Blues bags are as tough as I've seen, and you don't want to lug anything more. I want to get rid of mine for something more friendly; the materials eat up my skin. Hard cases are just not practical, and really, not needed. I've had my basses under more buses than I can count in soft bags, and never any damage. The most damage I've ever had happen in a soft bag was just the result of my own clumsiness, and that has never been more than a popped seam or a good ding. Short of getting hit by a car or just plain dropping it, a soft case is more than enough... Not that moving basses around is ever a convenient chore.

A lot of Germans use "Soundwear" bags. I don't know where they're made, or availability in US, but they are VERY sturdy. They are stiff cordura, heavy, and expensive, but maybe what you are looking for. I prefer my Mooradian!
