Hawkes

Has anyone checked out the Hawkes bass in Boston? I missed out on a great one years ago(Jimmy Atlas bought it) in Chicago. There is also one at the Bass Garden north of NYC. Anyone play that one?

Thanks in advance for any feedback.

George

I think Geoff's is a Hawkes Professor, I played it a LONG time ago, prior to an overhaul by Jeff Bollbach (who does EXCELLENT work). All I can really remember was - it sounded big (I can't really remember if it was a defined big), it had a long mensure (which I think has been fixed with a false nut)...

Sorry...

I played that Bass Garden Hawkes and thought it was very nice. I liked the bass I bought better but it was very good.

You might want to contact Ken Smith on that bass. He has seen it and played it and perhaps might even own it now.

I don't know if this is it or something else:

Do you mean the Hawkes at Upton? It's a really lovely bass.

Ken said that bass the Garden had was not something he bought. He mentioned that Bollbach didn't work on that Hawkes that he worked on the Prescott school bass from there. He discussed that Hawkes bass and other Hawkes basses in his form, linked here.

The Bass from the Bass Garden I bought right after ISB and really loved the bass however, I was going through a rough period paying off bills and what not so I sold it to Ken Smith The Hawkes in Boston use to belong to Geoff at one point. Gary and Eric have it now and I just finished playing it last week and I have to tell you that it is a canon) I love Hawkes basses because of their big robust looks and sound) If you have a moment go up to the UPTON SHOP IN BOSTON and check it out I'm sure you won't be disappointed!!!

Ken Smith-- always the gentleman.

This description identifies the origin of the bass for sale at Upton in a manner completely consistent with Ken's diatribe. Hmm... seems if there's any attempt to mislead, it doesn't come from Upton.
