Help with Information on EH Roth Bass

Hi to all. I am new to the forum. Recently I purchased my first upright, and I plan to use it for mainly jazz, and some bowing. I came across an E.H. Roth German made bass, made in 1974 and puchased it. I wanted to get an opinion on what people have heard about these basses, and if it was a good choice. I would also like to know someone's take on how much they think it should be worth. It looks in very decent conditions. I was also looking at a 2 yr old knilling bucharest bass. What might be the takes on the Roth vs. the Knilling? I really look forward to all who respond with their knowledge and expert advice. I wanna know if I made a good desision. Thanks alot.

I used to own an E.H. Roth. There was a thread about them with a few photos and some good info - I'll try to find it.

I did end up selling it for $2K. I'm sure I could have sold it for a bit more. I was offered more at one point about a year earlier but I didn't want to sell it at that time. I bought a New Standard hybrid LaScala. The Roth was a good bass.

You made an excellent decision. The E.H. Roth basses are at the top of the Scherl & Roth line. Back in 1974, S&H was still an independent company and was generally considered to be one of the best in terms of quality and setup of imported European stringed instruments targeted to beginners through college age players. Today, most of the Knilling instruments are made in S. Korea and have gained a reputation for being so trouble prone that some public school districts in my area will no longer accept Knilling basses on bids. IMO, the '74 Roth and a two year old Knilling are not in the same league.
