Hermann Dölling jr.

I have a Hermann Dölling jr. double bass from Marknaukirchen in Germany. My guess is that this bass is from about 1890.
Are there anybody that have some more information on this maker? I know that he made some copies of Maggini basses. Have anybody seen these?

Here's a picture: http://www.kontrabass.biz/images/HDjr.jpg

Thanx!

Nice Bass. To me, it looks French but many German Basses near the French border do as well. We sometimes call them Alsatian.

I have a bit of info on Dolling in the Henley Violin Dictionary, his training and his Family. If you PM me with your fax#, I will copy the pages and fax them to you. He was born in 1862 and died in 1923.

Please show pics of the back and scroll as well. Here is a link to my Bass photo page. Use this as an example of what types of shots are important depending on any special features your Bass may have as well. Here; http://www.kensmithbasses.com/Double...ble_basses.htm

Nice pics again. This is one of the nicer German Basses of it's time. The large shoulders taken from the English and French Cello shaped Basses. Here is a Similar looking Bass to yours imported to USA and labelled Morelli as a brand; http://www.kolstein.com/instruments/...04/index.shtml

I have seen several other German basses with this French look as well as at least one Italian Bass from the 19th century from Turin by the Fench border. The French and English were trading partners and made similar instruments in the late 18th to early 19th century as workers worked in their neighboring country. The Germans would copy both English, French and Italian models to fill orders and meet demand. The Hawkes company in England had Basses made in Germany around that time as well.

Here is a 5-string Bass similar to yours from the same family; http://www.nahrmannbass.com/basses/20/index.html

Thanks again...
Actually, It seems like it original was a 5-string. There's one extra hole on the other side of the pegbox (filled).

btw, it is a beautiful instrument! One of the best german instruments I have played for a long time.

Dölling

Hej.

Perhaps it would have been better to send this as a PM. Would you please share your thoughts with those of us who do not speak Norwegian?

Hermann Dölling jr. double bass from Marknaukirchen in Germany, can anyone estimate about what one of his basses would be worth now, in great condition, made around 1900. Im looking to buy one (I found one in Europe) Im trying to research this maker so I can see if I have much room for negotiating..Thanks to anyone who can post or PM me..
