Herold Jager Bass

Can someone provide me with some information on the Herold Jager basses and their estimated value (all carved)?

I just purchased one to restore and was looking for some more information.

Thanks,

Maggie

Jaeger

Should be Jaeger? Spelling.
Whole family of makers. The Herman Jaeger's are particularly nice. I worked on a Harold Jaeger bass about thirty years ago that wasn't as good. More of a student bass. Kind of heavy and a thick neck.
They are in the Dictionary of Violin Makers by Cyril Woodcock. Also, in Jalovec's book on the German makers.

"Died in Poverty". Last line in the biography of any violin maker.

On my learning curve my 3rd bass was a "Herold Jaeger" said to have been from the
1930's. I paid about $7800 US in 2000. I no longer have that bass, but remember "liking" it. When I "shop" for a bass today string length has become very important to me. Good luck making your bass the best it can be. Foilracer

I owned a nice Herold Jaeger Bass a few years ago. It was a larger 3/4 bass with a 42 1/2 inch string length. It had a very clear bowed tone which made it great for chamber music, and with some jazz strings it had some serious thump. I enjoyed the sound, but it needed a new fingerboard and some other work. At the time I didn't want to put the money into it, but I probably should have held onto it. I have other pictures but they were too large for me to upload them right in my post. I'd be happy to email them to you. Here's a close up of the label! It was a shop bass...if it didn't have a label someone would have probably called it a juzek and sold it for more money...haha

I have really enjoyed mine. Made in Czechoslovakia, not sure when though. Nice deep bottom and sensitive top, cuts through nicely, although I do amp it in larger settings.

Wow!

My husband just strung this bass up a few days ago and WOW! I'm amazed at the incredible sound. Thanks for your posts and information.
