| Hofner 7/8 Recently, I posted about my search for a good intermediate instrument - the first significant step up from my starter bass (a Shen SB180 hybrid). Considerable quantities of gasoline were burnt visiting local dealers and several days were spent shuttling basses back and forth for my teacher, Glenn Richman, to inspect them.
When the dust cleared, a fully carved Karl Hofner 7/8 (said to be identical to the Paesold 592) had come to the top of the pile. She's big, she's loud, and she's not bad looking, either. I wanted an instrument with lots of volume and projection - and while I considered a Chinese bass with deeper, richer tone, nothing else had the punch of this big German gamba.
Thanks to Glenn for interviewing the shortlisted candidates and to Steve Swan for allowing me to take the time I needed to make a good choice. Apparently, this was Steve's personal bass for the last two years, so I feel a bit like I've stolen his girlfriend!
