Hofner Bass ?

hello all

Today i was looking for a Ddouble basss, and i went into a shop that had one hanging around, the guy claimed it was from gerrmany, buut new nothing about the bass.. after looking through the left F Hole, i saw the Hofner sticker on iit. the guy wanted about 2000 dollars or it. It seems to be in good conditon, except the paint was sort of missing on the neck, No pics atm because i am using a hotel PC and no way of sending them, it looked like it was a 3/4 scale ? not sure, because the managerr had no clue about the insrument.. Im hesitating to buy it because i have found no teacher in Kuwait ( The bass is in the UAE). and i dont want to gett it and screw up my technique advancmentt by developinng bad habits.Ii guess the question is if i should get it and hold on to it till I find a teacher ( Kinda hard in kuwait) or just forget about iit till i find a teacher and then order one ? I have till tomorow to decide, then i havee to fly back Home

Tthanks
(sorry for typos, this keyboard is new to me :P

Hi stingrayz,

Some Hofner basses are made in Germany and some in China.
I've only seen plywood ones, but I think they make hybrids and carved basses as well.

Have you read the Newbie links?

Buying a bass, when you are just beginning, especially a 2nd hand bass, is a minefield without knowlegeable help.

Are there any luthiers in Kuwait or the UAE that you could ask?

I'm not sure of the market for basses over there, but if its anything like here, there are not many basses around.

In which case, $2000 for a well set up plywood with NO PROBLEMS is a good deal.

Hello,
thanks for the reply.

the problem is that if i get the bass, i will start playing on the wrong foot, because if i dont find a teacher soon ill just start developing bad habits.. and i dont think i can just leave the instrument without playing it =p.
I think i should just wait.. maybe i can order one when i get the teacher and start a few lessons or something.. and ask him for some advice...
And no, i dont think there are any Double bass luthiers in the middle east.. think ill order one..
