Hello,
I am currently looking at potentially buy a Hofner. Its a solid top with most likely ply side and back(flatback). It's currently not set up very well, but it has a really nice tone and sustain on it's low E string and the D string has a real punch behind it.
My first question is on the history of Hofner double basses. Does any one have a nice summary of honfer double basses. I'm finding it quite hard to learn about them and their reputation of bass quality.
My second question is regarding the fingerboard. It is a painted fingerboard BUT underneath it's ebony, we know this from looking at where the paint was worn off and revealed the ebony. It also has an ebony tail piece. Why would they have painted this black? A tutor i know reckons this is because it was fashionable to do so back in the day, but i still find this rather odd.
no pictures sorry ! in a rush, maybe later in the week. any help or opinions would be much appreciated
