Question Hofner double basses

Hey Gang!
Just doing the research for a soon to be purchase of my first double bass. (been playing electric for over 25years). Looking at either an Anderson travel bass (see my other thread) or considering going 3/4 size and im looking at the Hofner Advanced double. It seems to be the best value for money. I would like to hear from anyone who has had one of these if they are any good for the price for country / old rock type music. The advanced hofner has a spruce top & solid maple back. Any info or input would be greatly accepted. Thanks.
Rusty.

I've only seen one Hofner, a laminated one. It was 40 or 50 years old, and seemed pretty average (nothing bad about, it just didn't blow me away).

My advice (that I learnt from these forums and the newbie links), is to take a good DB player with you when you check out basses. You normally get what you pay for with double bass, so spend as much as you can.

If I were you... Id buy the best real double bass I could afford first, and then think about EUBs or travel basses.

Good luck.

Personally haven't played a hofner(Chinese made), so cannot comment. But I think it may be a good idea to visit say Puglisi shop and try it out.

My hofner.

Mine is around 40 - 50 years old and look exactly like this.

That is a great ply bass.
I've used for more than 2 years and been as my back up bass now.

My bass is a 50+ year old Hofner, made in Germany (not sure where they're constructing now.)

Personally, I like it a lot, but I can understand the thought that they're not mindblowing. Nothing wrong with it, but I've certainly played nicer basses...only all of them generally cost a few $K more.

Hi Hofner owners! I'm sorry if I came across as putting down Hofners!

It's hard to judge emotions on the Intar-web!

Let me re-state my experience. The Hofner I saw was at a luthiers waiting for a general tidy-up. It was a beautiful looking laminated bass with 'mojo'and sounded good (from the small time I spent on it - no bowing).

In fact, I let the luthier know that I'd be interested if the bass was ever for sale.
