How to amplify a double bass?

Hi everyone,

My cousin has offered me his double bass, since he doesn't use it that much. As I play in a rockabilly outfit I obviously said "ok" to the offer (would've said yes even if I played death metal ) but I am wondering what I will need to buy in order to amplify it at rehearsals ?

I am a total novice to the upright (so much so that I don't actually own the instrument yet) so I am utterly clueless If a thread was already started on this, please direct me to it

Thanks,

EPB

You'll need a pickup and an amp. There is a Rockabilly forum (if you scroll down) and you'll probably find good advice on which pickup is better and other good advice. Also, if this is a carved bass, please don't stand on it.

Welcome to the DB side.

Come to http://www.rockabillycass.com for advice from a lot of other rockabilly players, many of them professionals. They'll be able to give you better advice than people who play other styles (no offense to anyone).

In the meantime, you could wrap a towel around a mic, fasten it with tape and stuff it behind the tailpiece. As recommended here.

Thanks everyone, I'll have a look at the other (sub)fora mentioned For the record, I don't have the upright yet. Have been breaking out my cheap fretless a lot, just to get that "no-fret" feel, although I'm sure the experience will not be comparable
