How Do I Move With An Upright, That Is Not Via An Airplane

Hey,

I'm moving to Toronto in the fall, which is 1039 km from where I live now. How is the best for me to move my bass there? I will not be taking a plane, so I was wondering what is the best way to move it since I will not be getting a hard case (way too expensive for me).

Are there any other cases that are more protective than my cheap version of a soft case? Are there some that are better padded and not as expensive as a hard case?

Are there any tips for how to travel with it in either a car, truck, or train?

Thanks!
Kat

If your moving by truck wich im guessing you are , you could get a box built for your bass , that will be hard to deal with and be very large and heavy , but will protect your bass. Just a strong wood box shaped after the bass would do it . The old school way !
As it will be very large , you will need to have some place in the truck, since i dont know if your travelling with furnitures etc. Will you have the possibility to travel with the bass ?
You could just take the normal way with the bass in a hatchback car off course.

I moved across country 4 years ago, and had movers pack my stuff while I fles. I had a crate built for my URB (my woodworking skills stink or I would have built it myself, didn't look too difficult), must have cost me about $10 in materials then another $30 for the guy to build it. I put the crate in storage and will keep it for next time I move.

My brother just moved, and while he doesn't have an URB he has a tone of music gear. He moved about 200 mi from where he was, so he packed up his stuff in his SUV and moved it himself.

Either/or would probably work in your situation

If you're not going to put it in your car and move it, see if you can rent a hard travel case from someone in your area and send it back when you are done.

Drive it in your car if you can, assuming you have a car. If not definitely build a crate for it. Some shippers will handle these things, some will not. Definitely insure it before traveling that far.
